At midnight in China time, e-commerce giant Alibaba kicked off Singles Day, the day when the biggest amount of online sales of the year occurs and when the Chinese company hopes to beat all records.

The countdown began a few minutes after the end of a huge party in Shanghai, western China, where personalities like actress Nicole Kidman encouraged the Chinese to attend the grand date. The actress presented the trailer for a short film about martial arts in which the eccentric Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba and one of China’s richest men, makes his acting debut. After the screening of the film, which debuts today, the businessman appeared on stage with other actors, all dressed in traditional costumes.

Also participating in the party were Brazilian model Victoria’s Secret Lais Ribeiro, Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, former Portuguese soccer player Luis Figo, American singer Pharrell Williams.

This year’s goal is to beat last year’s number and exceed $ 17.8 million sold in just one day through portals like Tmall and Taobao. In this edition 140 thousand brands (60 thousand international) will offer more than 15 million products, in addition to the Aliexpress promotions, the international version with which the group works in countries like Brazil.

The event, which began in 2009, with the participation of only 27 brands, last year had a participation of more than 100 thousand stores. In all, Cainiao, the delivery company belonging to the group, processed 657 million orders and reached 175,000 orders per second.
